Leaving Jasper today and driving east, the landscape changes dramatically as you leave the Rockies and head into the open prairies. Watch in awe as the land relaxes into a gentle slope, transforming from jagged peaks and craggy cliffs into rolling ravines and river valleys. About 46 km from the town of Jasper you’ll have the opportunity to visit Miette Hot Springs, the hottest mineral springs in the Canadian Rockies. Featuring two outdoor bathing pools – one deep and the other shallow – and fed by hot sulphur spring waters, these pools are chlorinated and cooled to about 40 degrees Celsius for you to soak in and enjoy.
Approaching Edmonton, soaring skyline and lush parklands dominate the bluffs overlooking the winding North Saskatchewan River. Founded in 1795 as a Hudson's Bay Company post and later named Fort Edmonton, the settlement acquired capital status in 1905. It grew as a service center to the North during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-98, in the 1930s as an aviation centre for bush planes, and finally in the 1940s as a construction base for the Alaska Highway.
Day 7 Edmonton | Free day to explore
Spend a day exploring West Edmonton Mall, the largest shopping centre in North America. Complete with an expansive water park, amusement park, indoor skating rink, and mini golf park, and over 800 stores. For those looking to get outside, Elk Island National Park is less than an hour’s drive from the city, and offers great wildlife watching and hiking trails.
Day 8 Edmonton to Drumheller | Includes admission to Royal Tyrrell Museum | 280 km/173 mi
Depart Edmonton and head south towards the badlands of Alberta and the city of Drumheller. This fascinating destination is home to a unique landscape shaped by sandstone pillar hoodoos. Many dinosaur fossils have been excavated from this area, drawing palaeontologists from around the world. Visit the Royal Tyrrell Museum (included) and walk amongst the impressive array of dinosaur fossils.
Day 9 Dinosaur Provincial Park Exploring
From Drumheller, travel two hours to Dinosaur Provincial Park, where you will have a chance escape the ordinary and venture into the rugged Canadian Badlands. Two interpretive displays allow you to see what a dig site really looks like. Check out the bones of a “duck-billed” dinosaur still partially encased in the sediment that buried them. Or, a full body (articulated skeleton) of a Corythosaurus, the “helmet headed lizard”. Continue to Cypress Hills Provincial Park – the hidden gem of Southern Alberta
